Origin of FX
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) authorized Rogers Media to launch the television channel Highwire in February 2011.
According to the CRTC, Highwire is “a national, English-language Category 2 specialty programming service devoted to the entire genre of action and adventure, including selections from crime fiction, epic, and heroic drama.”
On October 31, 2011, FX Canada, a standard-definition and high-definition version of the channel, was released. At the time of its debut, Rogers Media controlled the channel its whole.
However, on December 16, 2011, the CRTC authorized FX Networks’ application to buy a 20% stake in the channel’s direct parent business.
They also applied to buy a 16.7% stake in the holding company that owns the remaining 80%, for a total ownership stake of 33.6%. (with Rogers retaining the remainder). The channel was added by Shaw Direct on November 22, 2012.
On April 15, 2013, news broke that All My Children and One Life to Live, two American soap operas that had been revived through Hulu and iTunes, had been given exclusive domestic broadcast rights by FX Canada.
However, All My Children and One Life to Live were abruptly canceled from FX Canada’s schedule on May 17, 2013.
This was almost three weeks after their debuts and a day after Prospect Park announced a schedule modification for both shows that would decrease each week’s broadcasts to two episodes (from four). They were swapped out for repeats of 30 Rock.
Initially, Rogers had intended to develop a localized version of FXX, the American spinoff channel that debuted in September 2013 and hosted a number of FX comedy series.
Series that have been relocated to FXX is still airing on FX Canada in the meantime. The Canadian edition of FXX eventually debuted on April 1, 2014, and was initially scheduled for January 2014.
Nearly three years after its debut, Bell Satellite TV negotiated an agreement to carry FX Canada and FXX; on October 10, 2014, they were added to its satellite and Fibe TV lineups.
Bell was one of the most well-known TV providers that did not provide FX Canada. This was frequently mentioned in advertisements for the channel on its affiliated networks.
According to rumors, the channel’s inclusion in the redesigned Hockey Night in Canada served as the deal’s driving force.
The channel adopted the current global logo in January 2015 and started referring to itself as FX. Disney said that it would end the “FX on Hulu” brand in December 2021.
What is Channel FX
It is a division of Rogers Communications, Rogers Sports & Media. It holds the controlling 66.64% stake and acts as the managing partner and the FX Networks division of Walt Disney Television.
Also, it holds the remaining 33.36% stake, and jointly owns FX, a Canadian English-language discretionary service channel.
Based on the same-named American cable network, written dramas and comedies make up the majority of FX’s programming.
Any new original programs created by its co-owned studios, FXP and 20th Television, for the flagship FX channel in the United States will air on FX Canada as part of the agreement between Rogers Media and FX Networks.]
This also included shows ordered for the FX on Hulu hub that will debut in 2020. Such shows include Devs and Mrs. America because Canada does not have access to the Hulu streaming service.
Beginning with American Horror Stories and Reservation Dogs, all FX on Hulu original series that had not been previously announced as showing on FX Canada will instead air on Disney+ via Star as of February 23, 2021.
It follows that while the channel carries the majority of FX programming, it does not carry all original shows that debuted before 2011.
For instance, the channel didn’t start airing It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia until the middle of 2013, and FX Canada only had second window rights to Sons of Anarchy because the network had already sold the debut rights to Super Channel for each season.
More on FX Programming
Additionally, certain shows produced by other studios were not included. This is including Justified and Anger Management (both produced by Lionsgate) (primarily produced by Sony Pictures Television).
In the majority of these instances, other Canadian broadcasters bought the broadcast rights.
The animated series Archer, which was purchased by Corus Entertainment (for broadcast on its Teletoon at Night block and, later, Adult Swim), and The New York Times Presents, which is distributed separately by Red Arrow Studios.
It eventually became accessible in Canada on Crave. they are the two in-production FX or FXX original series that do not air on the Canadian equivalents of those channels as of 2021.
Although Cake has not yet appeared on the FXX Canada linear channel, previous seasons are now downloadable through both Disney+ and FXNow Canada.
